Chapter

Twenty-Two

SORSCHA

“He’s alive, though barely.” Gaius removed his fingers from the naked man’s pulse point. Rain pounded on the roof high above and against the door just off in the corner.

Aside from the mark of The Order inked into the man’s forearm, there wasn’t a scratch on him. No bruising. No signs of starvation or thirst… Off to the side, there was a full rack of torture devices, but they couldn’t have touched this man without leaving an obvious wound…

“They’ll be back any moment,” Gaius said, looking at the door. “The cathedral is situated on a hill. That leads to the river then, yes?”

Sorscha nodded, still inspecting the man. “Straight out to the docks. Gaius, this blood on the stall is fresh, but there’s nothing on him.”

“I know, but we don’t have time to figure it out. We get Amira and get the fuck out of here.”

“What about him? We just leave him here?” It was like they’d switched roles—Gaius acting with logic and Sorscha honed in on right and wrong.

“What do you propose we do?” he snapped. “Float him around in the air above us? It’s him or the Empress of Coronnoco.”

Dammit, he was right. “I can’t leave him.”

Gaius moved in a small circle, cursing and rubbing at his hair. “Can you do the hiding with magic thing?” he said when he finally stopped, waving his hand around as he tried to find the words. “And float him above us while still hiding us?”

Sorscha nodded firmly. “My magic isn’t as strong as it was, but it will hold.”

“Fuck. Fine. Get him out of the chains, then.”

She spelled the chains off and sent the prisoner’s limp body to levitate above their heads.

Gaius looked up, his face contorted with too many emotions to identify, not the least of which was fury. “At least put some clothing on him. His arse is right over my head.” Sorscha giggled, the sound unhinged, and spelled a pair of breeches on the man.

“This better not get us caught,” Gaius snapped.

“Relax, it’s going to be fine.” But the back door was rattling with more than just wind and rain. Sorscha wrapped them in her magic, letting power fill her veins until her hands glowed red. “We’re cloaked.”

Gaius’ dagger slid free just as the door opened.
